An Akha Funeral

Throughout the funeral, the ancestors of the deceased have been called by various means, including chanting, the bamboo musical instrument, and other offerings. I notice a family member climbing on the roof and retrieving this bamboo pole. Attached to the top of the pole with string are two wood carvings that symbolize the sun and moon. I’m told that these shapes are a signal to the ancestors that Atoo has died and will soon be making the journey back to the ancestral lands.
