An Akha Funeral

An Akha Funeral Main Page

A couple days before the burial, the eldest son of the deceased visits a neighbor’s house to “borrow” money to finance the funeral. Actually, the son is relatively well off and doesn’t need to borrow any money, but this is more of a ritual than a necessity. He visits a well-respected and somewhat well off neighbor, who understands the intent of the visit. He has whiskey and tea ready and all the attendees drink first. In the bottom left the photo, in a small basket, the neighbor holds a number of coins.
