I have developed a little reputation around these areas as having "a different eye" than the Japanese. Well, that is a bit obvious, since I am not taking the same trite pictures as everyone else. Perhaps it is this different eye that impels people to look over my shoulder, trying to see what I am snapping. As soon as I take the pic and evacuate the area, the fastest Japanese photog gets to run over and set up his tripod in the same spot. The ghostly figure at the left has been doing just that. Sometimes I like to set up and very studiously, very meticulously, take a picture of nothing. I even played a really cruel joke later, where I carefully took a pic of the Family Mart convenience store. That really threw them off the mark.
In addition to the snow lanterns, there are little holes made in the snow at foot level and equipped with a candle, as you can see in this pic. More gimmicks!
