I decided to snap a quick pic of these ice sculptures, and I got my first surprise of the evening, a little human contact in the midst of chilly mediocrity. This man and his friend were on a double date, two pairs on a romantic little trip to the festival. This one thought he would impress his date by acting like a clown in front of the foreign cameraman. He jumped up onto the sculpture, acting as if he was dusting some snow off the tiger, and said just audibly, "Bee you ti fa roo!" In this way, he is sendind out a telepathic message to me that he wants his picture taken. By doing this he shows his girlfriend that he is fearless in the face of foreigners. My Japanese ESP has developed enough to know that he asked me nicely, so I indulged him by swinging my camera over and snapping away. His girlfriend laughed appropriately, although she also sent me a telepathic message (in private, so he couldn't hear). "Yes, I know he's a fool, but thanks for indulging him." You're welcome, I said with a thought. Next: A naked nymph Back to Snow Lantern Festival Ed's Photos of Japan Main Page Copyright © 1999 by Ed Kaspar All rights reserved |
