No doubt you have heard stories about the Japanese work ethic and how this has contributed to the formerly incredible economy. Have you heard about how, during the early days of the industrialization, the workers kept up their productivity by taking amphetamines? I heard it, but am not sure if it is true. In any case, the popularity of illicit drugs is growing at a rapid rate these days, especially speed, perhaps another reason for the fast walking Tokyoites. (Sort of adds a new dimension to the title of this gallery, no?) For those of you not willing to take a chance with illegal drugs (penalties are very, very severe), how about a little boost from a potion? Pharmacies like this one stock several dozen varieties of tonic drink that provide an energy boost, help cure a cold, etc. The actual effects of the potions are very mild, but the sale of many of the tonics is still regulated by the Health and Welfare Ministry. Due to a recent decision by this government body you will soon find it easier to purchase your little pick-me-up. About 200 varieties were removed from a list of regulated tonics and you now can skip the pharmacy as seen above in the photo. Simply go to the ubiquitous convenience store when you feel that energy slump creeping up! And after work, when the unstoppable anxiety turns into insomnia, you would do well to have stopped at a pharmacy for your sleeping pills. You are not alone in this, as the sale of sleeping drugs has risen 32% since 1993. Be careful in this balancing act, though, as there are consequences (see the Employment gallery). |
