While the guns are the so-called muscles of the field artillery, it is the observer who provides the eyes. An observer will use binoculars, lasers, and experience to create targets and their precise locations, calling in deadly fire on the enemy. Here a student is observing rounds impacting in a safe training area, and in the top left corner of the pic you can even see a white phosphorous smoke cloud.
